This 7.5 inch section of B. eliasi displays extraordinary iridescent shell. The specimen has been sanded and polished to enhance the beauty of the iridescent shell.
Baculites eliasi is an average sized baculites with a low degree of taper, smooth flanks, a nearly smooth venter, and very elliptical cross section. Smaller specimens can be slightly curved and taper as much as six degrees, whereas the larger the specimen the lower the taper angle. The suture pattern is similar but less complex than Baculites compressus. The species is common to the Bear Paw and Pierre Shales.
