LK Ammonite Deshayesites
Deshayesites sp.
Lower Cretaceous
Volga River, Saratov Region
Russia
This is a very fine example of the Lower Cretaceous ammonite Deshayesites. There are at least four ammonites exposed and probably more still in the limestone concretion matrix. The ammonites still retain much of their original aragonite shell and subtle iridescence is present. The largest ammonite is 3.5 inches.
The Lower Cretaceous deposits are well known for extensive outcrops and very well preserved ammonites in limestone concretions. The Aptian age sequence of marine shales contain concretion zones rich with ammonite fossils.
